What is the Horizons Program?

Horizons is a community leadership program aimed at reducing poverty in rural communities of fewer than 5,000 that have experienced significant decline or demographic change.  The program's goal is to help communities understand poverty, help them commit to action to change it, and then bring about lasting change in their community.  It is funded by the Northwest Area Foundation and delivered by Montana State University Extension

It draws people together with programs and activities to forge the dynamic leadership they need to take on difficult challenges like economic decline, poverty and demographic changes.

What’s in it for YOUR community?
• An 18-month commitment from MSU Extension and the Northwest Area Foundation to deliver training and resources around leadership, poverty reduction, community development, visioning and strategic planning.
• Organized community-wide dialogue for action and change
• Opportunities to enhance and expand leadership and communication skills.
• The power to take charge of your own future.
• We need your help to ensure that at least 15% of each participating Horizons community takes part in the visioning process.
• You can help develop a community action plan for poverty reduction, leadership development and a plan for systemic change and sustainability for your community.  The NWAF will coordinate grants of up to $10,000 for communities that meet the thresholds:  at least 30 people participate in Study Circles, at least 25 in LeadershipPlenty training and 15% involved in visioning in your community.

"We have new leaders in the community because of what we are doing here.  People are volunteering for things that they had never even been invited to before.”  quote from pilot Horizon participant.
